Description:
My approach to treatment is informed by the principles of multicultural counseling, which encourage awareness and acceptance of intersecting identities, and by existential/humanistic philosophy, which basically assumes that all people are searching for meaning in their lives and aspire to feel connected to others, while struggling with feeling alone in the world. I have worked with clients from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural groups, from various socioeconomic circumstances, of different ages and sexual and gender identities. I provide affirming support while challenging my clients to identify obstacles to the realization of their potential and the achievement of their goals. I believe therapy is a collaborative relationship.
I have experience working with clients who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, those who are gender non-conforming or identify as transgender, and those who are involved in BDSM, kinky, polyamorous or open relationships, as well as any clients challenged by depression, anxiety, obsession or compulsion, or life adjustments like career change, retirement or bereavement. I also have experience working with older adults, people living with HIV, and couples, including same sex and serodiscordant/magnetic couples. I appreciate working with clients who have a desire to change their behaviors around sex, pornography, alcohol or other drugs, as I have personal experience with recovery. I believe that each of us has the capacity to change and that altering patterns of behavior enables us to create lives that are more free and fulfilling.
